Why Ceramic Lighting Colors Look Different Under Different Light
Ceramic lamp colors can appear different under daylight, warm light and cool light. Learn what causes these variations and how to approve ceramic glaze colors accurately for custom lighting projects.

Ceramic lighting is valued for its handcrafted texture, rich glaze and natural color variations. However, buyers often notice that the same ceramic lamp can appear warmer, cooler, lighter or darker depending on where and how it is viewed.
This does not always mean the ceramic color is incorrect. In many cases, the difference is caused by lighting conditions, viewing angles, surrounding colors, glaze characteristics, camera settings and screen displays.
Understanding these factors can help hotel lighting buyers, interior designers and residential project developers evaluate ceramic samples more accurately and avoid unnecessary color disputes.

The physical ceramic glaze may look noticeably different from the product photo because of lighting, camera settings, screen display and glaze reflection.
As shown in this comparison, the green ceramic glaze on the physical sample appears brighter than the completed lamp shown on the phone. This does not necessarily mean that the glaze color is incorrect. The product photo, phone screen, surrounding light and reflective ceramic surface can all affect the color we see.
Why Does the Same Ceramic Lamp Look Different?
Ceramic glaze interacts with light differently from painted metal, plastic or fabric. Its appearance can change considerably depending on the light source, viewing angle and surrounding environment.
1. Color Temperature Changes the Appearance
Different light sources have different color temperatures, measured in Kelvin.
Warm light, such as 2700K or 3000K, usually makes beige, cream, brown, terracotta and antique finishes look warmer and richer. Cool light, such as 5000K or 6500K, may make the same ceramic finish look lighter, grayer or slightly bluish.
For example, a warm beige ceramic table lamp may look:
- Creamy or slightly yellow under 2700K lighting
- More neutral under 4000K lighting
- Cooler or grayer under 6500K lighting
- Different again under natural daylight
This is why a ceramic color should be evaluated under lighting conditions similar to those of the final installation.
For a hotel project, the ceramic lamp should ideally be checked under the same color temperature that will be used in the guestroom, corridor, restaurant or public area.
2. Natural Daylight Is Not Constant
Natural daylight changes throughout the day.
Morning sunlight, midday daylight, cloudy conditions and late-afternoon sunlight all produce different visual effects. A ceramic lamp photographed near a window in the morning may not look the same when photographed in the afternoon.

Under soft natural daylight, the glossy green ceramic sample appears darker and more muted than it does under stronger direct light.
In soft, indirect daylight, this green ceramic glaze appears deep and muted. Its curved glossy surface also creates highlights and darker areas, making the color look different across the same ceramic piece.
The direction and intensity of daylight also matter. Direct sunlight can create strong highlights and make a glaze appear brighter, while indirect daylight produces softer and more balanced colors.
For this reason, simply stating that a photo was taken in “natural light” does not guarantee that the ceramic color will appear completely accurate or consistent.
3. Ceramic Glaze Reflects Light
Ceramic glaze is not always a flat, uniform surface. Depending on the production process, it may be matte, glossy, semi-gloss, reactive, crackled, textured or layered.
Glossy glazes reflect surrounding objects and light sources. Matte glazes absorb more light and may appear darker. Reactive glazes can show several different tones on the same ceramic body.
Curved ceramic surfaces also reflect light at different angles. One side may look brighter while another side appears deeper or more saturated.

Under warm indoor lighting, the same ceramic glaze appears much brighter and more saturated. The difference between this image and the soft-daylight image demonstrates why “natural light” alone is not a consistent standard for ceramic color approval.

4. Cameras and Mobile Phones Adjust Colors Automatically
A photo does not always reproduce the color seen by the human eye.
Smartphones and cameras may automatically adjust:

- HDR effects
Two phones can photograph the same ceramic lamp at the same time and still produce noticeably different colors.

The environment around a ceramic lamp can influence how its color is perceived.
A beige lamp placed against a white background may look darker. The same lamp placed against a dark wall may appear lighter. Warm-colored furniture, curtains, flooring or wall finishes can also make the glaze look warmer.

- A Pantone or RAL color used as a general direction
Pantone and RAL colors can help communicate the intended color direction, but they are printed or coated color systems. They cannot always reproduce the depth, transparency, texture and reflection of a fired ceramic glaze.
A physical approved ceramic sample is normally the most reliable production reference.
Step 2: Review the Sample Under Multiple Light Sources
The ceramic sample should be checked under more than one lighting condition, including:
